Mazda has been playing coy when it comes to what’s under the hood of the upcoming 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata, marking the fourth generation for the venerable sports car. Last month, though, the automaker gave us our closest look yet at what will be driving the droptop—and American drivers have a lot to look forward to.
The MX-5 Miata will boast a SKYACTIV 2.0-liter engine in the U.S. and a 1.5-liter engine in other markets. We first caught wind of this rumor earlier in the year, but the confirmation narrows the area of speculation to the actual output of the powertrains. Comparatively, the current Mazda3’s SKYACTIV 2.0 cranks out 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque while the current Miata produces 167 hp and 140 lb-ft.
Despite the lingering questions, we’re confident that the next MX-5 is slated to be the best yet. Mazda’s 2014 Paris Motor Show Press Kit promises that “[all] available drivetrains have been specially tuned for the all-new MX-5,” and Mazda drivers know that the automaker’s engineers can deliver.
Specific release information about the new MX-5 is still pending, but you can sign up for updates here or visit DAS Demo for a closer look at the brand’s latest offerings.
